Frames are bad unless used as a weapon

September 30th, 2009

Chrome Frame… its a feature that the product team determined would not be relevant to users but would create a stir… Hence a dysfunctional feature… Less about users in this case and more about making noise to support the adoption of the browser.

Most people when asked would not say, “…awesome, I can run IE6 in a brand new fast’ish browser with all the benefits of IE its so great…’  More often the feature will act as a draw for IE users and once in the Chrome trap, screw the chrome frame for the actual chrome app…. coarse but good, like when the defense scores a touchdown…success on the weakness of your opponent.

Browser war meets art of war…

Distance Run Details and post mortem

Map Player from Garmin

Map Player from Garmin

This was an interesting run, in that i felt good almost all the way through it. The areas i had some issues were at the end *mile 11-12.

Once i got to the last mile i was fine relative to the other miles.

Splite for the Philly Distance Run... was going for 10 sec improvements ore more per mile

Splite for the Philly Distance Run... was going for 10 sec improvements ore more per mile

While the overall time tells a story the splits are more what I’m caring about.

I was looking to go at a constant pace of 9:41, my heel hurt before the race and slowed me down a little. Also i slowed my pace to have a more enjoyable run and hang with some new friends I met there. As i look at my training, i did few long runs and was coming out of a bout with plantar faciitis as a factor in my lack of marked improvement.

All things considered, I’m glad I did it and happy for consistent results with minor improvement.

All this as i begin week 6 of P90x.

Read outliers (audiobook)

September 22nd, 2009

Malcom Gladwell’s other book on interesting things we choose to discount.

Outliers: The Story of Success

Malcom Gladwell

Malcom Gladwell

Outliers

What I got:

Most often people overestimate their… I did it my way’ness and discount where they came from and all the crap that had to line up in other to get them where they are, good/bad or indifferent. Also the concept of hard work and commitment  plus presence of mind when the timing has arrived to seize and opportunity. All the factors that had to come together to make a Bill Gates or Steve Jobs are consistent and predictable once a pattern or checklist is available. This book is that checklist.

What i didn’t get:

A clear conclusion to the questions of how a society oblivious to the issues it faces in the way it ‘leaves so much on the table’ can solve for more ‘outliers’ so there are less outliers and more just successful people. What can I do for my kids for example…do i enroll them in the KIP school in the bronx, used the book as a checklist. I came away wanting to be aware enough to act on advantages my kids may have to give them a better shot than even I had. And I’m an outlier in my own mind to a small degree.

Why I think others may like it.

Most of the reasons people are successful they can count on their hands. If they thought of it for more than a minute they would find the there are not enough hands for all the counting needed to truly assess the number of opportunities, advantages and chances they had/have to become an outlier. It is also interesting to hear explained all of the evidence backing up his theories. There are people who think they A. Did it themselves or B.Did it inspite of others blocking. Clearly they could read this book and have their minds changed or at least another point of view.

Enjoy-get the audio book.

Finisher replay ING distance run

September 22nd, 2009

http://philadelphia.competitor.com/features/finishlinereplay/
enter bib number 12227

Some notes on my run:

  • Did about the same as last half marathon in May
  • Prepared less, due in part to a bought with plantar faciitis
  • Ran long runs on weekends loosely following the higdon chart
  • used inserts
  • Started the p90x workout program 5+ weeks ago and stuck to it so far
  • No diet changes.
  • Ran a little slow pace due to some heel pain before the race that didnt get any better
  • Had a couple more miles in me I think
  • Sprinted through the 10 mi mark to beat slightly my broad street time

What I need to do to go faster

  • track work
  • loose weight
  • finish p90
  • more runs for slightly longer that 5mi during the week.
  • and race in 5ks for lower splits and faster mile times

Snow Leopard T&Cs interestingly odd

September 9th, 2009

Maybe not odd but interesting, have you ever read the terms and conditions of apple’s software? Here’s the section I found very interesting and hilarious, Section H. FAA Notice, you know you think your OS is awesome when you need to put an FAA notice in it….
